Three days long weekend itinerary for Malta

A detailed break down on how to 'do it all' in Malta

Day 3

Valletta, Senglea, Cospicua, Vittriossa, Mosta and Mistra (St Paul's) bay for sunset
We had our flight at 21:45 tonight, so plenty of time to do everything on the list. However, since we got back to our rooms at around 2:30 am last night, we started a bit late (10:00 am).
Also, Sliema and St Julian's are nice places for night life and bars, doesn't have much to offer in terms of points of interest (you can take a walk to Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Sliema) and the bays are very so so. We walked around those places on our 1st night, and were done with it.
Picture
First things first, St John's Co Cathedral in Valletta - must visit, and the free audio guide is worth it. And no, the dome of Valletta that you see from a distance and in all the pictures is not this one. That's Carmelite church.
Picture
This cathedral is not only beautiful, but has a lot of history stored in it
Picture
The beautiful steep streets of Valletta. The two main streets for photography are the Old Bakery Street and the Archbishop street.
Picture
However, any narrow lane you turn to, its just picture perfect
Picture
Malta follows the UK rules. UK adaptors and UK driving rules. And we also see plenty of British style telephone booths and post boxes all across the country.
Picture
A little green here, maybe :)

Picture
The Fort Saint Angelo in fortified city of Vittoriosa, as seen from the Upper Barrakka gardens. Sadly, the fort was closed on the day we visited.
Picture
Senglea, another fortified city on the Grand Harbour, facing Valletta
Picture
View of the Carmalite church and the Valletta skyline from the road leading to Sliema.
Picture
Since most of these cities are so compact, that the best way to view one city is from the other one. Or by taking a ferry along the Grand Harbour, and viewing every city from the waters. This is Vittoriosa as seen from Senglea
Picture
Fort Saint Angelo forms the backdrop here for this lovely Luzzu on Grand Harbour
Picture
Senglea skyline from Vittoriosa - from the elevated gate of Fort Saint Angelo (the fort was closed that day).

Since we had some time with us, we decided to drive to Mosta and visit the Mosta Dome. It was built between 1833 and the 1860s. The design of the present church is based on the Pantheon in Rome, and it is said to have the third largest unsupported dome in the world.
Picture
The Mosta dome narrowly avoided destruction during World War II, since on 9 April 1942 a German aerial bomb pierced the dome and fell into the church during mass but failed to explode. This event was interpreted by the Maltese as a miracle. (Tip: if you just have Mdina and Rabat on your plan for the day, you can include Mosta, as its closer)
Picture
We then drove to Mistra bay to view our final sunset before heading to the car rental to drop the car and head to the airport.
Go to introduction
go back to - day 2

Hi..found you thru Shivya IG. Fascinated with your pics and travels As mentioned in one of your pics, that your Italy trip was exactly that of my cancelled trip. Since we are thinking of picking it up again and considering that I really had trouble planing my route from Assisi to the Amalfi Coast, I would really appreciate if you could throw some pointers on how to get from either LeSpezia to the Amalfi Coast.. I see you went to Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi where did you stay.. how did you travel .. train I would assume. I have so many questions, and hope you respond. Your itin. and travel tips would be much appreciated. Kind regards ... Angela

Hi Angela,

Thank you so much for the appreciation. Yes, its a shame that you had to cancel your trip to Italy! :(

I actually took my 1st ever guided tour in Italy. The entire tour was with two tour companies - I wanted to experience it to decide for future. So, my conclusion: North and Central Italy - do it on your own with trains... better use of your time and you will enjoy the flexibility which tour companies lack (trains are very well connected and flexible, and easy to understand). But I totally loved my South Italy tour. Its called 'Italy on budget tours' and they have a 4 days Amalfi coast tour from Rome. Its very well organized, and gives you plenty of time to do Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano. Capri and Naples in 4 days! And it isn't expensive too.

Otherwise, to go from La Spezia to South and doing the south yourself, its a long route - 1st La Spezia to Rome and then Naples and further. I would recommend making Naples or Sorrento as your hub, and taking day trips (or boats/ferries) to Positano, Amalfi town, Capri and Pompeii. I had strict 15 days and too much to do, but if you have more time, then you may decide to stay in Positano or Capri for an additional day too. They are very beautiful!

Hope this helps!

During geography class, my teacher went to discuss the topography of the European landscape. Usually, I am uninterested in a class discussion. However, something caught my attention. My teacher pointed at a small island near Italy. I haven't noticed that island before. It prompted me to listen to the discussion of Mrs. Gibbs, our geography teacher. After the two-hour discussion, I approached Mrs. Gibbs. I learned that Malta was unnoticeable to geographers for quite some time until the end of the 19th-century.

In case you want to check out the tour company and the Amalfi package, here's the link:

http://www.italyonabudgettours.com/en/activity/5973/amalfi-coast-tour-from-rome---4days

They do several tours around Italy. and I met a girl on my trip who did her entire 1 month in Italy by taking several small tours by this tour company.

I have realized that guided tours are not my thing, but if you wanna take tours (specially if you are skeptical about traveling alone, guided tours are very helpful and you make new friends!), then you should check them out.

Thank you very much. I had planned on going from LeSpezia to Assisi and from there it was a 6 hr train ride to Naples where we were to base. And take day trips to Positano and Amalfi. There wasnt any time for Capri - those pesky vacay days - So I guess will do it the same way. Thanks for the link to the tours, yep..not a fan of guided tours. But will lean on them if I build the sap to go solo :) Thks again.

Hi Samita, really enjoyed reading your blog on Malta. I'm planning to visit in a couple of weeks and wanted to check a couple of things with you.

1. Was parking easy? We are going in early Aug so I imagine it'll be really busy?
2. What's the best way to get a ferry from Comino to Gozo?
3. Did you find that you were able to learn about the city without a guided tour or would you recommend us doing one to explore the different areas?

Thanks so much for your help!

These bays are really very beautiful pieces of architecture. I haven’t seen such a beautiful and delicate pieces of arts before. All the details that are made in the art work are very delicate together with classic in nature.
